Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

 Program Overview

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the initial level of certification available for emergency medical services personnel. EMTs are the first to respond to the injured in emergencies such as automobile accidents or medical situations. They assess the nature and extent of the injury, provide initial medical care, and transport the patient to a hospital if necessary. EMTs have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to quickly stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life-threatening emergencies. Emergency Medical Technicians are part of a comprehensive EMS response system while under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment usually found in an ambulance. Emergency Medical Technicians are a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system.
